Yep, I’ve got a formula. Give me oodles of money and I will tell you – NOT!!!!!!
As oft repeated question with a cliched answer as it might be, it is worth writing about yet once more because there is a twist at the end. I don’t intend to insult your intelligence. So, please be patient and allow me to indulge you here.
Isn’t all this striving that we go through everyday, day after day – is to be happy? Are we not constantly looking for the next great product, next fancy thing, next inspirational writing (Hello!!!!!!!!) so we may catch a fleeting glimpse of that increasingly elusive concept in this crazy world of ours?
Is happiness an elusive concept or is it real? Can anyone be permanently happy? How can we gain that? Is it something to be gained from outside?
Yes, I know that you know, I know that I know – but please….. if you are rolling your eyes, remember I have asked for your permission to indulge me.
So I have to raise the same questions for which we all know the answers…………OR DO WE – know the answers I mean.
We all repeat that overused phrase – “Happiness is not somewhere outside, happiness is within you”. If we really believed in that then many industries will have to die a quiet death don’t they? That question also is an overkill – I know.
Does being happy mean –
Less work, more money, more goods, more friendships, stable relationships,
More giving of time, money, energy – sacrificing
Denying oneself of pleasure
Living lavishly, living simply
Yes, anyone of those things can make me happy – temporarily. So, how do I get everlasting happiness?
Sathya Sai Baba said – “Happiness is not in doing what you like, but Happiness is in liking what you do”.
Read that again. Sounds simple? Read again.
“Happiness is not in doing what you like, but Happiness is in liking what you do”.
If I like everything I do regardless of what it is – from the most ordinary to the extremely creative, if I LIKE EVERYTHING that I do and not be selective about it, then I am bound to be happy. I am not classifying anything, I am not judging anything, I am just doing everything because I like what I do.
That is the key – liking everything I do.
Whether I agree or not, my welfare is intimately tied to that of the society that I live in, therefore my first objective must be to work for the welfare of Society. Meaning liking everything I do in society, whether it be my job, my relationships, my friendships, my associations, my possessions, my mundane activities – everything. When I like everything I do, my welfare is guaranteed because the society benefits with my attitude and actions.
Doing from a place of liking will leave me satisfied. Self-Satisfaction results in contentment – which is another word for happiness. When I am content I like more of what I do and the cycle repeats. As simple as it sounds, this is the highest spiritual wisdom imparted by Sathya Sai Baba.
“Happiness is not in doing what you like but Happiness is in liking what you do.”
Shall we try, just for today?
Will you join me in liking everything that you have to do today and not entertain one resentful idea about it, but actually, genuinely like everything (starting with this post).
If you can’t, at least pretend that you like because – we make when we fake.
There, now we have a key to unlock the statement “Happiness lies within” and actually practice it.
Leave your comments whether it was easy or hard to like everything you do.
Until next time
With Love and Respect
